Associate Director/Director, Molecular Biology

Durham, NC

Position Summary

The Associate Director will report to the Senior Director of Research, and will be responsible for managing a group that supports the company’s small molecule discovery efforts through validation of new RNA targets and the development of molecular and genetic assays. He/she will be expected to drive a culture of consensus driven teams and to streamline the drug discovery process with strategic consideration and tactical insights. The successful candidate will have a strong background in molecular biology and genetics, and be highly analytical, goal oriented and collaborative.


Position Responsibilities

  • Provide expertise in the design and interpretation of molecular, genetic and genomic experiments to support ongoing small molecule drug discovery programs
  • Supervise and mentor scientists responsible for generating molecular biology assays and reagents for target validation, drug discovery, and biomarker discovery
  • Scout, evaluate and integrate new technologies for genetic, molecular or phenotypic analysis of gene/RNA function

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in molecular biology, cancer biology or genetics or related discipline
  • 5-10 years of experience working in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience managing scientists in a drug discovery setting
  • Proven track record of applying innovative genetic, molecular and cell biological techniques to the discovery and development of targets and potential therapeutics
  • Experience working with RNA is preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on the ability to interpret and communicate complex genetic/molecular data to different audiences
  • Ability to work effectively in a highly-collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment, and manage multiple tasks and responsibilities

Scientist — Medicinal Chemistry

Durham, NC

Position Summary

The Scientist, Medicinal Chemistry will be working with our internal research and external medicinal chemistry groups to design and synthesize small-molecules in the pursuit of target validation, hit-to-lead and lead optimization. The successful candidate will engage in synthetic and medicinal chemistry problem solving and will collaborate across disciplines to drive programs.


Position Responsibilities

  • Work with internal and external medicinal chemistry groups to successfully advance programs.
  • Analyze data and collaborate with our multidisciplinary teams to prioritize synthetic targets
  • Lead and oversee effective interactions with CROs.
  • Lead medicinal and synthetic chemistry efforts, demonstrate high level of problem solving and creativity
  • Interpret, and communicate results effectively
  • Maintain and promote safe work environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS or PhD. in synthetic organic chemistry
  • If PhD, 3-7 years of experience, at least 3 of those in an industry setting
  • If MS, 7-10 years of experience, at least 5 of those in an industry setting
  • Strong track record in impacting hit-to-lead and lead optimization programs
  • High level of creativity and productivity with strong synthetic chemistry problem solving skills
  • Experience with ITC is preferred.
  • Proven ability to work collaborate effectively with others in a dynamic and highly matrixed environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience working with CROs is preferred

Scientist — Molecular Biology

Durham, NC

Position Summary

The Scientist will have experience with molecular biology techniques and assay development, be ready to learn state-of-the-art RNA-based technologies, be prepared to work independently and part of a team, and have strong communication skills.


Position Responsibilities

  • Independently plan and execute a broad range of molecular biology experiments, including tissue culture, next-generation sequencing, and RNA-based techniques.
  • Independently develop and employ in vitro, cell-based, molecular, functional and/or biochemical assays
  • Develop and test hypotheses, employ carefully designed controls and objectively analyze results
  • Troubleshoot experimental and instrumental technical issues
  • Present results in team meetings and reports

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in molecular biology techniques is required, including: cell and tissue culture; RNA preparation, handling and purification; cell transfection and siRNA knockdown; qPCR
  • Experience developing high-throughput in vitro, cell-based, molecular, functional and/or biochemical assays is highly preferred
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing is highly preferred
  • Experience with bioinformatics or the handling of large datasets is highly preferred
  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Cell or Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or a related field with 3+ years of experience is required, preferably in a biotech setting

The Scientist will have experience with high-throughput screening, RNA purification and handling, assay development and liquid handling, be ready to learn state-of-the-art RNA-based technologies, be prepared to work independently and part of a team, and have strong communication skills.


Position Responsibilities

  • Independently plan and execute a broad range of start-of-the-art small molecule screening projects against RNA targets, incorporating high-throughput screening, next-generation sequencing, and RNA-based techniques in collaboration with other scientists.
  • Independently develop and employ in vitro, cell-based, molecular, functional and/or biochemical assays.
  • Develop and test hypotheses, employ carefully designed controls and objectively analyze results.
